Ghana has emerged as a major transit hub and processing zone for illicit drugs under President John Mahama’s administration, the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) alleged during a press briefing on Tuesday, September 22, 2026.
National Organiser Henry Nana Boakye claimed that narcotics traffickers have established operational bases and laboratories within the country, aided by complicit port and airport officials.
Highlighting international intercepts as evidence of systemic failure, Nana Boakye asserted that state facilitation is driving the surge in narcotics movement.
“Our information is that our country has become a major transit point for illicit drugs, for narcotics. And it’s not by accident, but because of the complicity of officials at our port and our airports,” he stated.
The opposition organizer accused government officials of directly assisting drug networks to export processed substances abroad.
“The intelligence we have picked is that these drug lords, these traffickers, they have established bases, laboratories here for processing of illicit drugs and narcotics under the watch of President Mahama,” he alleged.
Connecting domestic operations to recent international seizures, Nana B emphasized that Ghanaian authorities are turning a blind eye.
“That is the reason why volumes of drugs traced to Ghana keep surfacing in the holds of ships and the luggage of passengers in Sydney, Dunkirk, and Johannesburg,” he said, reiterating that “It is happening here in our home, under the government’s watch.”
