The Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) has announced plans to take legal action against two individuals alleged to have aided the Member of Parliament for Manhyia South, Hon. Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah, to evade arrest on Wednesday, 23 September 2026.
According to a press statement issued by the Office, the conduct of the two suspects, who were captured in a circulating social media video actively intervening during the operation, is currently being assessed. EOCO maintained that appropriate lawful steps would be taken against them for facilitating the lawmaker’s escape.
Clarifying the events that transpired during the drama, EOCO stated that its officers were acting in the lawful discharge of their statutory duties when they attempted to arrest the MP in connection with an ongoing investigation.
The investigative body revealed that Hon. Baffour Awuah had previously been invited on two separate occasions in February 2026 to assist with investigations, but failed to honour both invitations. Today’s operation was therefore part of lawful measures to secure his attendance.
Explaining why the operation was aborted, EOCO noted that the situation escalated, prompting officers to disengage to prevent endangering public safety.
Following the botched arrest, the Manhyia South legislator reportedly fled to the precincts of Parliament to seek sanctuary, despite the House being on recess.
Addressing the constitutional implications of the incident, EOCO affirmed its respect for parliamentary privileges and immunities, but emphasized that membership of Parliament does not place any individual above the law or bring criminal investigations to an end.
The Office assured the general public that investigations remain active, adding that video evidence from the incident is being reviewed to determine the next line of action while strictly adhering to the rule of law.
