Transport fares up by 8% from Saturday

September 23, 2026
GPRTU

Commuters across the country will from Saturday, September 26, pay eight per cent more on public transport fares following a successful agreement between transport operators and the government.

The consensus brings to a close weeks of intense negotiations between the Ministry of Transport and commercial transport leadership over proposed adjustments for the 2026 fare window.

Prior to the deal, major operator bodies including the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) and the Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council (GRTCC) had submitted requests for higher fare adjustments, pointing to rising operational expenses.

While transport operators initially pushed for a 30 per cent increase—and had expressed a willingness to scale their demand down to 25 per cent—a joint technical team formed by the Ministry, the GPRTU, and the GRTCC evaluated the various operational cost components and settled on the eight per cent figure.

Throughout the review period, union leadership repeatedly directed commercial drivers to adhere strictly to existing rates. As late as mid-September, both the GPRTU and the Progressive Transport Owners’ Association (PROTOA) maintained that no new fare adjustments had been authorized until the inter-ministerial evaluations concluded.

The mandatory eight per cent review will apply across all commercial passenger services, including intra-city mini-buses (trotros), shared taxis, and long-distance buses, in line with the official fare chart issued by the stakeholders.
