The High Court has turned down a bail application for 40-year-old Senior Nursing Officer Salomey Awiti Baffoe following strong opposition from state prosecutors, who insisted her continued detention is crucial for ongoing enquiries. The Techiman-based health worker faces charges of abetting the publication of false information in connection with the widely publicised “Ghana Jollof” TikTok matter.
Presiding over the case on Thursday, 24 September, the court ruled that the cyber-related nature of the probe poses a genuine risk of witness tampering should the accused be released. While refusing the application, the court ordered the prosecution to speed up its investigations to ensure a swift resolution.
Defence counsel Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah had earlier implored the bench to grant his client bail, highlighting her constitutional presumption of innocence and arguing that the state offered no concrete evidence to substantiate claims of potential interference. He stressed that the offence remains a misdemeanour and drew attention to her parental obligations, noting that her remand is severely disrupting her child’s upcoming enrolment into Senior High School.
However, state attorneys successfully countered the plea, maintaining that investigators still require the suspect in custody to help track down a second key individual known as “Ghana Jollof”.
