Boeing sets 18-month timeframe for revival of Ghana’s national carrier

Ghana’s long-awaited national airline could resume operations within a year and a half, according to global aerospace giant Boeing, subject to the swift setup of essential operational frameworks by the government.

The target was revealed during high-level talks between President John Dramani Mahama and senior Boeing executives on the sidelines of the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York. While offering technical assistance to help relaunch the flag carrier, Boeing noted that meeting the 18-month window relies heavily on completing preliminary preparations without delay.

However, discussions extended past fleet procurement, as President Mahama advocated for a wider commercial alignment aimed at modernising the nation’s aviation sector.

“Ghana does not want its relationship with Boeing to be defined simply by the purchase of aircraft. We want a strategic partnership that helps us build an aviation ecosystem—creating skilled jobs, transferring technology, strengthening our industrial base and positioning Ghana as an aviation and logistics hub for West Africa,” President Mahama said.

He emphasised that the administration is actively pursuing international collaborators who are prepared to inject capital into the economy, foster local expertise, and drive long-term industrial growth.

A central element of the proposal involves constructing a regional Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) facility in Ghana to service commercial aircraft across West Africa and the wider continent. The collaborative framework also focuses heavily on specialised training schemes, technical skills development, and technology transfer designed to generate skilled employment for local youth.

The drive forms part of the government’s overarching ‘Reset Ghana’ strategy, which aims to secure high-value foreign direct investment and establish the country as a primary trade, logistics, and aviation centre for the sub-region.

Although Boeing’s 18-month roadmap offers a clear benchmark for restoring the national airline, the final outcome remains contingent on how quickly the required regulatory and organizational structures are finalized.
