A major academic fraud scheme involving 178 students and over 500 altered course grades has been exposed at the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA).
Delivering a solemn address at the institution’s 18th Congregation on Saturday, Vice Chancellor Prof. John Kwaku Mensah Mawutor informed guests and the Chancellor of the unfortunate cyber breach.
“Some unscrupulous students and some unscrupulous individuals breached our system by hijacking our system and changing results in our system,” he said.
The breach was intercepted through the robustness of the university’s ICT infrastructure, alongside an intense month-long investigation led by the Director of the Information Systems and Technology Directorate (ISTD), Mr. James Amuzu, and his team.
Commending the IT unit for working late into the night to track every single alteration, Prof. Mawutor stated: “With the robustness of our ICT, hardworking director of UPSA ISTD, Mr. James Amina and his people, through their commitment and sacrifice, were able to identify each and every result that was changed in our system.”
The Vice Chancellor confirmed that the perpetrators behind the illegal grade adjustments have been identified.
“Chancellor Sir, I am happy to also inform you that the culprits have been identified. I have been informed that over 500 results” were compromised, he added.
