Dr Johnson Asiama, the Governor of the Bank of Ghana, has clarified that he no longer holds a seat on the board of the Ghana Gold Board (GOLDBOD).
Responding to inquiries regarding whether he intends to step down from the regulatory body, the central bank Chief revealed that he actually vacated the role roughly five months back and has ceased participating in its proceedings.
“I’m no longer a member of the Gold Board Board. I do not sit on the board of the Gold Board,” he said.
Dr Asiama highlighted that the governing legislation of GOLDBOD permits the central bank to be represented by either the Governor or any senior staff member up to director rank. Consequently, his personal presence is not legally mandatory.
“By law, the law that governs the activities of the Gold Board, there’s a provision there for Bank of Ghana to be represented either by the Governor or any other official up to the rank of a Director, so there’s that legal requirement. It does not necessarily need the Governor to be there,” Dr. Asiama clarified.
“As I speak to you, I resigned from the Gold Board Board about five months ago or so. I do not attend board meetings at the Gold Board at all,” he added.
His comments follow heightened public scrutiny surrounding GOLDBOD’s board membership and rising worries regarding potential conflicts of interest involving the central bank’s supervisory duties.
