Global Affairs Analyst and former aide to former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo, Dr Agbai Eke Agbai, has weighed in on the statesman’s recent publication detailing a past plan to sack his Vice President, Atiku Abubakar.
Speaking on the disclosure, Dr Agbai explained that the former president felt deeply betrayed by his deputy’s actions during their administration.
“He felt strongly betrayed, he felt that the loyalty that was expected from the vice president was not demonstrated but that said he has a forgiving heart and that is history now,” Dr Agbai said.
He described Obasanjo as a monumental figure in African political history, ranking him alongside historic icons such as Dr Kwame Nkrumah and Nelson Mandela.
“President Obasanjo represents almost an icon and a legend in terms of former presidents and history will record him as one of the best presidents comparative to the likes of Kwame Nkrumah, Nelson Mandela. Arguably Obasanjo can also be one of the best presidents that Nigeria has ever produced,” he added.
In his publication, former President Obasanjo outlined a strict political containment strategy deployed against his Vice President, whom he accused of attempting to undermine his administration.
Describing his approach, Obasanjo stated that Atiku was focused on upstaging and removing him from power, prompting him to “watch him like a hawk without giving any indication of what I knew and letting down my guard.”
In Volume 2, pages 31–32 of the book, Obasanjo offered a scathing assessment of Atiku’s character, citing his “propensity to corruption, his tendency to disloyalty, his inability to say and stick to the truth… and his readiness to sacrifice morality… for self and selfish interest.”
Writing further on page 49, the former president remarked that the prospect of Atiku acceding to the presidency would be “like a former armed robber has become the bank manager.”
