Posterity will remember Mahama as one of the 21st century’s finest leaders who fought corruption so fiercely – Dr Agbai

Dr Agbai Eke Agbai, a close associate, former aide, and Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library (OOPL) Board member, has commended President John Dramani Mahama for his sustained commitment to the fight against corruption.

Speaking in an exclusive interview on Frontline on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM, Dr Agbai noted that corruption remains a major concern across Africa, stressing that African nations must address the issue decisively to make progress.

He singled out Ghana as one of the countries with a strong mechanism for tackling graft.

“Ghana is getting it right by fighting corruption,” he declared, emphasizing that for Africa to progress, “we must adopt measures that will make corruption unattractive.”

He noted that what distinguishes President John Dramani Mahama from his peers is his ability to appoint competent individuals to drive his vision.

According to him, the reason Ghana is succeeding in its anti-corruption efforts is that President Mahama has assembled the best minds. While acknowledging that no country can be entirely free of corruption, he stressed that minimising it is crucial. He added that having the vision to assemble top talent in targeted sectors to resuscitate the economy is what sets a country apart—a distinction he believes defines Ghana under President Mahama compared to other African nations.

Dr Agbai stated that President Mahama is making a lasting impact and will be remembered for his competent leadership.

When asked to rate Ghana’s standing in global affairs, particularly following President Mahama’s performance at the UN General Assembly, he referenced a famous quote cited in Condoleezza Rice’s political memoir, No Higher Honour.

To reinforce his point, he re-echoed: “History is made in advance but written in retrospect,” indicating that John Mahama is writing history and when it is eventually written, “posterity will recognise him and place him as one of the best in the 21st century.”

He described President Mahama as an outstanding sub-continental leader, adding that his speech at the UN extended beyond Ghana to represent the broader interests of Africa.

He commended President Mahama for “challenging the global leadership on what must be, and what is deserving of Africa is worthy of emulation, and I cannot but salute him.”

Dr Agbai also highlighted Ghana as a safe destination for investors, suggesting that Nigeria must learn from Ghana if it seeks to make progress, noting that Nigeria’s current instability raises fundamental security concerns that discourage foreign investment.
