The Hohoe Municipal Director of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), Mr Raphael Kumaga, has made a passionate appeal to corporate organisations, business owners, philanthropists, and non-governmental organisations to come to the aid of persons affected by devastating floods in the area.
More than 4,000 people have been forced from their homes in the Hohoe Municipality of the Volta Region after the River Dayi burst its banks, submerging over 400 houses. Several communities along the river have been hit, with the Zongo community among the hardest affected. The neighborhood remains submerged, leaving residents stranded as floodwaters continue to spread through homes and surrounding properties. Some of those affected have been temporarily accommodated in classrooms while authorities work to secure more suitable shelter.
Speaking on Nyankonton Mu Nsem on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM, Mr Kumaga explained that the disaster was not caused by heavy rainfall within Ghana, but rather by the river overflowing as a result of heavy rains in neighbouring Togo. He noted that the main source of the River Dayi originates in Togo, and the resulting overflow severely impacted those who had constructed homes close to the riverbank. According to him, this is the first time the river has overflowed its banks to such an extent.
He lamented that the incident has placed additional pressure on the Hohoe Municipal Assembly and emergency responders. He also revealed that further heavy rains experienced today, 29 September 2026, have compounded the situation and caused additional damage.
“We are calling for external help. I called the Fire Service, Immigration, Police and the Ambulance Service to come and support rescue efforts,” he stated.
He added, “We also need support because as at now, the government and NADMO cannot support the victims. So any other NGO, institutions that are ready to support us can come to our aid.”
Meanwhile, Mr Kumaga stated that as part of measures to prevent similar disasters in the future, all residents who have built along waterways will be evicted, warning that a failure to act could lead to an even worse catastrophe.
