The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) has warned drivers charging beyond the approved 8% increment in transport fares to desist immediately or face severe sanctions.
Speaking in an interview on Nyankonton Mu Nsem on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM, the Deputy Public Relations Officer for the GPRTU, Mr. Samuel Amoah, stated that the union will enforce internal disciplinary measures against any member who flouts the directive. He explained that the union actively investigates complaints against its members and takes swift action when violations are confirmed.
To ensure compliance, Mr. Amoah revealed that the GPRTU has deployed a dedicated task force to monitor transport stations and routes. He noted that while some defaulting drivers are non-union members, comprehensive measures have been put in place to address the situation across the board.
He disclosed that the Ministry of Transport has supported the union’s request by deploying national security personnel to assist the task force in apprehending offenders.
“We will, from tomorrow, be joined by national security personnel courtesy of the Transport Ministry to monitor activities. As GPRTU, we have internal sanctions we will apply against our members. The punishment will include suspension of those caught overcharging. For those who are not members of our union, the national security personnel will handle them,” he stated.
Mr. Amoah maintained that the 8% fare adjustment was justified and urged the commuting public to cooperate. He added that while the union initially petitioned for a higher margin, the 8% increase was agreed upon following extensive deliberations with relevant stakeholders.
