Pre-tertiary teacher unions in Ghana have turned down a direct appeal by Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu to call off their nationwide strike and return to the classroom, insisting that they will not resume work until the government takes concrete action on their outstanding demands.
The declaration follows a crucial meeting with government officials that failed to yield any tangible commitment to address the grievances of the educators.
Speaking in an exclusive interview on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM’s flagship news program, Nyankonton Mu Nsem, the Communications Officer for the Pre-tertiary Teacher Association of Ghana, Mr Kingsley Ayimadu, stated that Monday’s engagement with the Education Minister offered nothing new beyond previously repeated promises.
He explained that teachers have grown weary of unfulfilled assurances from state authorities over the years and are now demanding immediate execution rather than verbal pledges.
Where we have reached at the moment, we are not taking promises, Mr Ayimadu declared firmly, emphasizing that only concrete results will convince the leadership to revise their stance and order teachers back to work.
His comments come after Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu appealed to the leadership of the striking unions to return to the classroom, assuring them that mechanisms had been put in place for the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission to engage with their leadership on Tuesday, September 29, 2026.
The teacher unions embarked on industrial action to protest government’s persistent delay in resolving long-standing issues, including the payment of accrued promotion allowances and arrears owed to members across the country.
Central to their grievances is the expiration of the previous collective agreement, as negotiations for a new framework have been completed but remain unexecuted by the government.
The striking teachers are also demanding the immediate and automatic placement of all personnel who passed the December 2025 and February 2026 promotion examinations onto their respective salary scales, alongside full payment of all arrears effective January 2026.
