The High Commission of the Republic of Ghana in Pretoria has issued an urgent public advisory to Ghanaian nationals living in or visiting South Africa, cautioning them to exercise extreme vigilance ahead of nationwide anti-immigration protests scheduled for Wednesday, 30th September 2026.
The demonstration, linked to the March and March movement alongside other groups campaigning against undocumented immigration, is anticipated to cause significant disruptions across major urban areas in South Africa.
In a official statement released on 29th September 2026, the High Commission strongly advised Ghanaians to take necessary precautionary measures, particularly those residing in or travelling through Central Business Districts (CBD) across the Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal provinces.
“The High Commission of the Republic of Ghana in Pretoria wishes to draw the attention of all Ghanaian nationals resident in or visiting South Africa to a planned protest action envisaged to take place on Wednesday, 30th September 2026 in the country, associated with the March and March movement and other groups campaigning against undocumented immigration,” the advisory stated.
To ensure personal safety, the mission urged citizens to avoid all protest gatherings, marches, and potential areas of confrontation, even if the demonstrations initially appear peaceful. Non-essential movement should be strictly limited on the day of the protest, especially around transport hubs, taxi ranks, major intersections, and busy central business districts where large crowds are likely to assemble.
Ghanaians were further advised to remain alert to road blockages, public transport disruptions, and sudden shifts in the security situation while allowing extra time for essential travel. The mission urged nationals to refrain entirely from engaging protesters or participating in arguments or confrontations concerning immigration and related political issues.
Citizens have also been reminded to keep valid passports, permits, visas, and other relevant immigration documentation safely accessible. The advisory advised individuals to keep mobile phones fully charged, maintain regular contact with family members and community leaders, and ensure adequate supplies of essential medication, food, and basic necessities for their households, particularly for children, the elderly, and persons with medical conditions.
“In this regard, the High Commission calls on all Ghanaian nationals to REMAIN CALM, VIGILANT AND LAW-ABIDING, and to take reasonable precautions for their personal safety and that of their families,” the statement stressed.
The mission further instructed nationals to cooperate with instructions issued by the South African Police Service (SAPS) and other authorised law enforcement agencies. It also cautioned the public against sharing unverified social media messages, videos, or voice notes that could spread unnecessary fear or panic, urging reliance solely on official and credible news sources.
Reaffirming its commitment to the diaspora, the mission emphasized that the welfare and safety of Ghanaian nationals remain a top priority of the High Commission as it continues to monitor developments across South Africa.
