Two Nigerians who served in the United States Air Force have been handed heavy prison sentences for their involvement in a massive international cyber fraud scheme.
Chijioke Timothy Odimegwu was sentenced to 111 months in a federal prison, whilst his accomplice, Harafat Mogaji, received a 78-month term.
According to court details, the duo targeted various businesses and non-profit organisations across the US. They executed the scheme using stolen credit card details and phishing emails, successfully redirecting payments and funds into accounts controlled by their syndicate.
The fraudulent network defrauded a victim in Iowa of $1.68 million, while another victim in Ohio lost over $720,000.
In addition to their prison terms, Odimegwu was ordered to pay approximately $366,600 in restitution, with Mogaji ordered to pay roughly $995,700.
The matter was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), with assistance from the US Air Force Office of Special Investigations.
