Ghana’s Chief of the Defence Staff (CDS), Lieutenant General William Agyapong, has urged top military commanders to adopt proactive strategic planning to neutralize emerging security risks across the country and the West African sub-region.
Addressing senior officers at the ongoing Ghana Armed Forces Generals’ Convention, Lt. Gen. Agyapong stressed that responding to threats after they emerge is no longer sufficient given the rapidly shifting security landscape. He noted that the military must continually refine its operational doctrines, policies, and strategic frameworks to stay ahead of future vulnerabilities.
The conference, themed “Adaptive Leadership in a Complex Security Environment: The Role of Shaping the Ghana Armed Forces,” aims to foster institutional learning, strategic foresight, and leadership enhancement among the top brass.
Lt. Gen. Agyapong highlighted that true leadership strength relies on open, professional dialogue rather than rigid conformity. He challenged the generals to draw on their decades of service, exchange perspectives, and debate ideas constructively, noting that senior rank must always be tempered with humility.
Emphasising the demands of modern warfare, the CDS called for seamless integration across all service branches, urging commanders to prioritize joint planning, shared strategic objectives, and coordinated field execution.
The convention features technical sessions covering intelligence protocols, military jurisprudence, retirement frameworks, ethical leadership, command operations, and contemporary defence administration.
Concluding his address, Lt. Gen. Agyapong tasked the senior hierarchy to uphold the core tenets of discipline, honour, integrity, and selfless service while steering the armed forces through evolving operational demands.
