Government Communications Minister Felix Kwakye Ofosu has dismissed opposition New Patriotic Party claims that Ghana has transformed into a “cocaine coast,” calling the allegations bogus and pointing out that the NPP remains the only party in the nation’s history with a prominent member directly tied to drug trafficking.
He cited the high-profile arrest, conviction, and imprisonment in the United States of Eric Amoateng, the former NPP Member of Parliament for Kintampo North, as clear proof of the opposition’s double standards.
“In all Ghana’s history or at least in our recent Fourth Republic, the only party I know whose prominent member was involved directly in drug trafficking was the New Patriotic Party – Amoateng, he was a Member of Parliament,” he stated.
During an interview on Joy News, the minister recalled an incident from 2012 while assisting Dr. Opuni with a parliamentary campaign in Kintampo North. He explained how he was booed off stage at a rally by local residents who supported the disgraced lawmaker because of his financial contributions to the area.
Mr. Kwakye Ofosu alleged that Mr. Amoateng routinely used drug proceeds to bankroll the NPP and buy political influence within his constituency.
“How does a party with such a record then come round claiming that people are being given protection?,” he quizzed.
