Sports and Recreation Minister Kofi Adams has dismissed widespread demands from the public for the dissolution of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), clarifying that the executive branch holds no legal authority to disband the football governing body.

Addressing the rising public frustration, the Minister acknowledged the mounting grievances from citizens regarding the continuous downward spiral of the national team. He insisted, however, that regardless of how deep the dissatisfaction runs, state authorities cannot legally intervene to dissolve the association’s structure.

The clamour for a total overhaul of the GFA reached a boiling point following the Black Stars’ dismal outings in the ongoing African Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying campaign. Agitated supporters expressed anger after a humiliating 4-2 defeat to The Gambia, a match widely viewed as the final blow that shattered public confidence in the national team management.

In the fallout from that crushing loss, head coach Carlos Queiroz agreed to step down from his position following discussions with the GFA. Despite the coach’s departure, a cross-section of football enthusiasts insisted that the football administration itself must be disbanded to allow for a complete reset of the country’s sports management.

Reiterating the government’s official stance, Mr Adams stated that taking such extreme action remains entirely outside the legal jurisdiction of the ministry.

Ghanaian football has endured an extraordinary slump in recent times, with the senior national team managing just a single victory across their last eight matches in all competitions. Furthermore, the four-time African champions have failed to secure an AFCON qualifying victory since September 2023, leaving fans increasingly disillusioned with the state of the game.

Speakingin an interviewon Joy sports, the Ministerstated that “It is an Association [and] I don’t think that Government has the power [to dissolve]”.

“We want to make sure the public interest Committee works and works for the good of all of us.

“But Government cannot dissolve the FA because it is a registered entity that pays its taxes to the appropriate authority.”
