The Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) has released the Member of Parliament for Manhyia South, Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah, on a GH¢50 million bail requiring three sureties.
This comes after the legislator turned himself in at the anti-graft agency’s headquarters around 10:00 am on Thursday, 1 October, to cooperate with ongoing inquiries.
His voluntary appearance followed an arrest warrant issued by an Accra High Court. State prosecutors obtained the warrant after informing the court that earlier attempts to invite the lawmaker for questioning had proven unsuccessful.
The anti-graft agency is probing allegations surrounding financial loss caused to SIC Savings and Loans, conspiracy to commit crime, tax infractions, and money laundering.
However, Mr Baffour Awuah has strongly refuted the claims, denying that he accepted GH¢2.2 million in legal fees. He has also contested EOCO’s account regarding how it previously sought his cooperation.
Meanwhile, EOCO has reiterated that the investigation is actively progressing and cautioned the public against premature judgment, emphasizing that all parties remain innocent until the judicial process concludes.
