The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has denied claims that it failed to issue prior notice to residents in the Avenor area before executing yesterday’s demolition exercise following a recent fire outbreak.
Speaking on Naynkonton Mu Nsem on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM, the Public Relations Officer for the AMA, Gilbert Nii Ankrah, stated that the Assembly served official eviction notices to the occupants as far back as 19 May 2026, but many simply refused to comply.
“We issued eviction notices to the occupants as far back as 19th May 2026, but many simply refused to move out.”
Mr Ankrah explained that the site, which is surrounded by industrial factories, is fundamentally unsuitable for human habitation due to the ongoing exposure to hazardous chemicals used by nearby operations.
“This area is surrounded by industrial factories using hazardous chemicals. It is fundamentally unsafe for human habitation.”
Addressing concerns regarding the future of the cleared site, the PRO assured the public that the Assembly does not intend to leave the land neglected or exposed to unauthorized resettlement, but will instead take all necessary steps to ensure the area is properly managed and put to appropriate use.
“The Assembly will not leave the demolished site neglected. We are taking all necessary measures to ensure the land is properly managed and put to appropriate use.”
