PNC Warns NPP Over Proposal to Auto-Install Presidential Candidate as Party Leader

The People’s National Convention (PNC) has cautioned the New Patriotic Party (NPP) over plans to amend its constitution to auto-install its presidential candidate as party leader during periods in opposition.

Speaking at the NPP’s National Delegates Conference at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi, the PNC warned that consolidating power in this manner threatens internal democratic values and restricts fresh leadership opportunities.

Delivering a solidarity address, the PNC clarified that its intervention stems from political goodwill rather than meddling in internal party processes.

“Reports have reached us that this conference may consider amending the party’s constitution so that the flagbearer becomes the leader of the party even when the party is in opposition.”

Highlighting the distinct demands of both roles, the PNC urged delegates to weigh the consequences before casting their votes.

“A flagbearer carries the party’s banner in election, a party leader must build structures, reconcile factions, and hold the party accountable between elections.”

“Concentrating both roles in one person risks weakening internal democracy and the space for new leadership to emerge.”

“We say this in the spirit of fraternity, not in interference.”

The proposed change forms part of broader constitutional reviews put before the 7,163 delegates gathered in Kumasi. The NPP’s Constitutional Amendment Committee confirmed that the final mandate rests entirely with the delegates.

Turning to the wider political climate, the PNC called on all major parties—including the ruling NPP and the main opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC)—to tame political rhetoric and restore decency to public debate.

“Words can divide, harm. Words can divide a nation. Political parties must lead in ending this.”

“Our democracy does not need people who merely hold occupy positions, but leaders who are efficient and can help consolidate it.”

Closing its message, the PNC presented itself as a credible third force capable of offering the electorate a fresh path forward.

“We are confident that in the 2028 Ghanaians are going to place their trust in the PNC.”
