Accra High Court Grants GH¢100,000 Bail to Senior Nursing Officer in False News Case

The Accra High Court has granted a GH¢100,000 bail to 40-year-old Senior Nursing Officer Salomey Awiti Baffoe, who stands accused of abetting the dissemination of fake news on social media platforms.

Under the terms set by the court, Ms Baffoe must produce two sureties, both of whom must be civil servants earning a minimum monthly salary of GH¢3,000, before securing her temporary liberty.

The health worker, who maintains her innocence and has pleaded not guilty to the charge, had been kept in custody while trial preparations continued.

This ruling overturns an earlier decision by the High Court to deny bail after state prosecutors argued that her release could compromise ongoing investigations and lead to witness tampering.

Court proceedings faced an unexpected pause, with the matter adjourned until October 5 to allow the presiding magistrate to participate in the annual judges and magistrates conference.

The prosecution plans to advance its arguments when hearings resume.

Meanwhile, defense lawyers insist on their client’s right to the presumption of innocence until proven guilty, noting that her release remains pending the complete fulfillment of her bail conditions.
