Election Watch Ghana raises concern over rising cost and low female representation in NPP primaries

Election Watch Ghana has commended the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for the successful execution of its delegates’ election, noting that the exercise demonstrates the party’s commitment to internal democracy and the strengthening of Ghana’s political institutions.

In an official report issued on 4th October 2026, the election observation body praised the Electoral Commission for managing the process professionally and keeping administrative errors to a minimum. It also acknowledged security agencies for maintaining peace throughout the poll.

However, the organisation questioned the deployment of over 3,000 police officers for a single internal exercise, urging stakeholders to continuously review security arrangements to ensure they remain sustainable, cost-effective, and efficient.

The report further highlighted the sharp decline in female leadership representation, expressing concern after only one woman was elected among the new executive team.

“The presence of only one woman among the elected executives raises concerns about the extent to which women are being adequately represented in political leadership,” the group stated. “If Ghana is to achieve meaningful inclusion in political governance, deliberate efforts must be made to create greater opportunities for women to participate in decision-making at all levels.”

Election Watch Ghana also raised alarms over the growing financial burden associated with internal party polls. The organisation observed that rising expenses for transport, meals, and accommodation put heavy pressure on candidates and risk making personal wealth the main factor in determining election outcomes.

To address the issue, the group urged political parties to consider centralising and financing basic logistics for accredited delegates.

“Such reforms would help create a more level playing field and reduce the influence of money in internal party contests,” the report stressed, adding that delegates must look beyond financial capacity, popularity, and personal influence when choosing leaders.

“Delegates should critically examine the ideas, proposals, track records, integrity, leadership abilities, and commitment of candidates before casting their votes. The quality of leadership produced by an internal election can have consequences far beyond the political party itself,” the statement concluded.
