The Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Hon. Mahama Ayariga, has revealed that government releases to the country’s 261 District Assemblies have experienced a massive boost, rising from GHS 390 million in 2024 to a cumulative GHS 9.1 billion over the past six quarters.
Addressing journalists in Accra on Monday, October 5, 2026, during the Government Accountability Series, the Minister outlined the government’s efforts to improve fiscal decentralisation and ensure local authorities receive adequate funds for development.
According to Hon. Ayariga, total disbursements to the 261 Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDCEs) stood at GHS 390 million for the entire 2024 fiscal year.
However, funding saw a 12-fold increase in 2025, with releases reaching GHS 5 billion.
The upward trajectory has continued into 2026, with GHS 4.1 billion disbursed across the first two quarters alone, taking the total releases for the six-quarter period from January 2025 to June 2026 to GHS 9.1 billion.
Illustrating the impact on individual assemblies, Hon. Ayariga pointed to the Abura Asebu Kwamankese District Assembly in the Central Region, which received GHS 280,000 from the District Assemblies Common Fund (DACF) in 2024. In 2025, allocation for the same assembly surged to GHS 14 million.
The Minister emphasised that the substantial increase in releases demonstrates the administration’s commitment to empowering local governance structures and accelerating infrastructure growth across the country.
