President John Dramani Mahama has tasked the Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs to roll out a dedicated television platform designed to broadcast the activities of Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs) directly to the public.
The initiative aims to open up the operations of local assemblies and give Ghanaians a front-row seat to decision-making processes within their respective districts.
Addressing journalists at the Jubilee House during the Government Accountability Series on Monday, October 5, Local Government Minister Mahama Ayariga revealed that the upcoming channel will air live proceedings from General Assembly sittings and community Town Hall sessions.
According to him, the sector ministry is already laying the groundwork alongside relevant state institutions to roll out the broadcast trials across selected assemblies.
“We believe in popular participation. We will work with NCCE, GBC and NCA to pilot live broadcast of General Assembly and Town Hall meetings in selected MMDAs,” he said.
Mr Ayariga noted that the project forms part of a wider agenda by the administration to deepen grassroots democracy and ensure district leaders remain answerable to the people they serve.
“President Mahama’s vision is that every local government authority must be service oriented and also oriented towards solving the problems of residents of their localities,” he said.
He added that providing real-time media coverage across all 261 MMDAs will eliminate barriers between local authorities and citizens, driving civic engagement across the country.
“The objective is to ensure that citizens are properly informed and participate in the governance of their localities,” Mr Ayariga said.
