Over 3,000 boreholes and 502 schools completed as Local Government Common Fund boost pays off

Mahama-Ayariga

The Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs has revealed a sweeping expansion of local development projects across Ghana, crediting a significant increase in District Assemblies Common Fund allocations for accelerating public infrastructure delivery.

Unveiling the latest disbursement impacts, the Sector Minister, Mahama Ayariga, highlighted remarkable milestones across primary healthcare, basic education, and safe drinking water provision designed to tackle longstanding local development deficits.

In a major drive towards universal health coverage, local assemblies have completed 397 out of 566 targeted Community-based Health Planning and Services (CHPS) compounds and health centres.

The newly operational facilities are already easing pressure on regional referral hospitals and expanding immediate medical access to rural dwellers.

To address overcrowded classrooms and eliminate learning under trees, the Ministry reported that 502 out of 761 planned classroom blocks have been fully completed.

Local authority officials note that these modern facilities are directly improving school attendance and retention rates in underserved communities.

The increase in common fund disbursements has also triggered a massive turnaround in clean water accessibility.

Out of 4,029 planned mechanized and hand-pump boreholes, assemblies have successfully commissioned 3,081 across the country.

Additionally, 97 out of 134 Small Town Water Projects are now complete, bringing reliable pipe-borne water to thousands of households.

Ministry officials maintain that the increased funding streams will continue to be closely monitored to ensure remaining ongoing projects are delivered on time to serve target communities.
