President John Dramani Mahama has granted a presidential pardon to 863 convicted persons across the country in commemoration of Ghana’s 70th Independence Anniversary.

The official release from Presidency Communications, dated Monday, October 5, 2026, confirmed that the executive pardon was exercised in accordance with Article 72(1) of the 1992 Constitution following formal consultations with the Council of State.

According to the official statement signed by the Spokesperson to the President and Minister for Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, the move forms part of activities celebrating the landmark milestone in the nation’s history.

“The grant of pardon is made in commemoration of Ghana’s 70th Independence Anniversary, marking this significant milestone in the nation’s history with an act of mercy and national reflection,” the statement noted.

A breakdown of the beneficiaries shows that first-time offenders form the majority of the group, with 819 individuals granted outright release. Thirteen elderly convicts aged 70 years and above, six seriously ill inmates, and two persons under special recommendation have also been granted outright release.

Additionally, 11 convicts currently on death row have had their sentences commuted to life imprisonment, while six inmates serving life sentences have had their terms commuted to 20-year definite sentences. Three prisoners were pardoned following petitions, while three others were freed under other specific considerations.

“The relevant state institutions have been directed to take the necessary steps to give effect to the President’s decision,” the statement added.

The directive is expected to be implemented immediately by the Ghana Prison Service and legal authorities to ensure the swift release and sentence adjustments of the affected individuals.
