Ghana teacher strike continues as pay talks stall

A nationwide strike by pre-tertiary teachers is set to enter another day after emergency talks between union leaders and state representatives ended without a breakthrough.

Negotiators for the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC) and the Ghana Education Service (GES) met union chiefs on Tuesday in a bid to resolve the dispute, which has brought public schools across the country to a standstill.

Discussions broke down over the processing of outstanding promotion data—a crucial step required to release backdated pay owed to thousands of staff.

Addressing reporters after the meeting, Thomas Musa, General Secretary of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), called on members to maintain the industrial action until the government provides binding commitments.

“We are waiting for clear timelines on when these processes will be completed and when affected teachers will actually see their money,” Mr Musa said.

The government maintains it is working to resolve the grievance.

Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu has urged teachers to call off the strike and return to the classroom, assuring them that outstanding allowances for staff working in deprived areas will also be disbursed once a validation exercise finishes.

Both sides are scheduled to return to the negotiating table on Wednesday.
