Ghanaian authorities have seized control of the National Cathedral development ground and formally disbanded its governing board, with the project’s long-term fate remaining unresolved.
Addressing reporters at the Jubilee House during the Government Accountability Series on Monday, Mahama Ayariga, Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, confirmed that management of the site has been reclaimed by the state and transferred to his ministry.
Mr Ayariga revealed that letters have already been issued to the Board of Trustees notifying them of their immediate dismissal.
“And so I have sent a letter to the board members informing them that they have been dissolved and given that the National Cathedral site is a property of the government of Ghana, I’ve also directed the contractor to hand over the site to the Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs awaiting further government directive,” he stated.
Future action regarding the disputed complex will depend on an ongoing legal assessment of historical spending under former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.
“After the Attorney-General has reviewed the audit that has been conducted, the forensic audit that has been conducted into the expenditures related to the initial plans to construct the National Cathedral by President Akufo-Addo and then based on the Attorney-General’s advice we would know what the next steps are, but for now the Board of Trustees stands dissolved and the site reverts to the Ministry of Local Government,” he added.
