Ghanaians have been strongly advised to embrace routine breast cancer screening as the October global awareness month, widely known as Pinktober, approaches.
Speaking on Nyankonton Mu Nsem, Madam Grace Fiardor, a nurse and Head of Wellness at TRUST Hospital, warned that breast cancer continues to claim lives prematurely across the country. She emphasized that timely medical intervention remains the most effective defense against the disease.
“The earlier it is detected, the better,” Ms Fiardor stressed, urging both men and women to treat screening with utmost urgency.
Pinktober is observed globally throughout October to heighten public awareness, encourage early diagnosis, streamline access to medical treatment, and strengthen palliative support for affected patients.
Highlighting key risk factors and symptoms, Ms Fiardor listed unexplained breast lumps, nipple discharge, alterations in breast size or shape, skin dimpling, and redness as critical red flags. She cautioned that anyone noticing persistent abnormalities should seek immediate professional medical attention rather than delay.
She added that continuous public education and early information sharing are vital to empowering individuals to recognize symptoms and access lifesaving care in good time.
“The earlier it is detected, the better. Breast cancer is a deadly disease that has sent many people to an early grave, but early detection can prevent further damage and improve survival.”
