Lawyers representing sports administrator Yaw Ampofo Ankrah have announced that their client will refrain from making further public statements or appearing before Parliament while an active investigation by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service remains ongoing.
In an official statement issued by legal firm Brookman – Amissah & Associates, counsel Jerry Avenorgbor Esq explained that appearing before Parliament while under suspension could compromise the integrity of the active police inquiry.
“In the circumstances, and while the investigation remains ongoing, it would be imprudent for Mr. Ampofo Ankrah to appear before Parliament in relation to matters that are presently the subject of the CID investigation,” the statement noted.
The legal team clarified that the decision does not indicate a refusal to cooperate with state authorities or constitutional bodies, but rather aims to prevent any potential interference with the investigation.
“Such an appearance, while the investigative process remains active and Mr. Ampofo Ankrah is under suspension, could potentially prejudice or otherwise interfere with the ongoing investigation, create avoidable complications for the investigative process, and undermine the integrity of the process through which the relevant facts are being established,” counsel stated.
Addressing the public discourse surrounding the matter, the law firm urged commentators, media houses, and the general public to exercise restraint and avoid treating unverified claims or speculation as proven facts.
“It is important to emphasise that the fact that an investigation is underway does not, in itself, constitute a finding or determination of wrongdoing against Mr. Ampofo Ankrah or any other person,” the statement added.
The former Director-General of the National Sports Authority reaffirmed his full cooperation with investigative authorities to help conclude the matter. His legal representatives assured that he will make a full response to the findings once the investigation reaches its conclusion.
