Kumasi demolition leaves traders stranded as Sofoline drivers resist impending eviction

Chaos and heavy wailing erupted along the Suame Roundabout to Abrepo Junction stretch in Kumasi as a Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) task force deployed bulldozers to execute a massive clearance operation.

Scores of traders, predominantly women and family breadwinners, were left stranded and jobless after containers, kiosks, and makeshift shops were leveled, destroying goods worth thousands of Ghana cedis.

Affected vendors who clashed with the task force reported receiving insufficient notice to secure alternative sites and alleged that KMA officials had previously collected GH¢200 from each trader under the guise of securing relocation space.

Staring at the rubble of their livelihoods, the devastated traders appealed for immediate intervention from the Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the Mayor of Kumasi, and Ashanti Regional Minister Dr Frank Amoakohene.

Simultaneously, the KMA and the Kwadaso Municipal Assembly face a mounting standoff at the Sofoline Terminal, where commercial drivers staged a protest against a directive to vacate their office complex by Friday, 9 October 2026.

Authorities reportedly intend to reallocate the facility to banking operators, rekindling a dispute that traces back to 2019 over alleged old rent arrears of GH¢1.2 million.

GPRTU Sofoline Chairman Albert Boamah reiterated that the complex was specifically constructed for transport operations and called for constructive dialogue.

However, agitated union members warned that any attempt at forced eviction would be met with fierce resistance, sparking severe security concerns ahead of the fast-approaching deadline.
