UTAG-UG threatens strike over unpaid Book and research allowances

UTAG

Members of the University Teachers Association of Ghana, University of Ghana Branch (UTAG-UG), have served notice of an impending industrial action over persistent delays in the disbursement of their 2026 Book and Research allowance.

In a formal notice addressed to the Executive Secretary of the National Labour Commission and dated October 9, 2026, the association expressed deep frustration that the payments have failed to materialize.

According to UTAG-UG, this delay is a clear breach of a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) signed between UTAG and the Government in 2020, which explicitly states that the allowance must be paid by the end of August each year.

The lecturers have given the state an ultimatum, warning that “if by Friday 16ᵗʰ October 2026 these monies are not paid, members of UTAG-UG will withdraw all teaching and related services beginning Monday 19ᵗʰ of October 2026.”

The notice, jointly signed by UTAG-UG President Dr. Jerry Joe Harrison and Secretary Godfred Bright Hagan, underscores that the association is counting on the cooperation of the labour commission to avert any disruption to the academic calendar.

Copies of the ultimatum have also been forwarded to several key stakeholders, including the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission, the Minister for Employment and Labour Relations, the Minister for Finance, the Minister for Education, the Director of the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission, and the President of UTAG National.
