Eight suspected internet fraudsters arrested in Kotokrom for severe assault during initiation

Eight individuals have been taken into custody by the Regional Operations Unit of the Ghana Police Service for their alleged involvement in cyberfraud and the violent assault of a 21-year-old man at Kotokrom, a suburb in the Sunyani West Municipality of the Bono Region.

The arrest followed a distress call received by a police patrol team on 4th October 2026, at approximately 4:30 p.m., reporting that a group was actively attacking a young man in the area.

Upon arriving at the scene, officers found the victim, identified as Godstime Umukoro, bearing multiple visible marks of physical assault.

Police immediately apprehended eight suspects at the scene.

The arrested individuals have been identified as Peter Mbam, 24; Godwin Moses, 26; Humble Oweifah, 18; Osas Ogbemudia, 30; Samuel Aisosa, 22; Ashile Godbess, 24; Alexander Uyuo, 30; and Patrick Romans, 25.

According to the police statement, the suspects admitted during interrogation that the severe beating was administered as a mandatory initiation process into their cyberfraud operations.

They claimed to have undergone the exact same violent ritual prior to joining the syndicate.

Further police investigations revealed that the suspects were brought into Ghana by an individual named Nwachukwu King Augustine, who acts as their chairman.

The syndicate reportedly operates by using downloaded images of foreign military personnel to deceive victims online, pretending to be deployed on active duty at the war front in Yemen.

Once the victims are manipulated into transferring funds, the proceeds are deposited directly into their leader’s account.

The Bono Regional Police Command praised members of the public for their prompt intervention and alertness, reaffirming the service’s commitment to sustained cooperation with local communities to combat crime across the region.
