The High Commission of the Republic of Ghana in Pretoria has issued an official safety advisory alerting Ghanaian nationals residing, working, or travelling within South Africa to heightened security risks following reports of ongoing protests in major commercial centres.
The alert focuses particularly on individuals located in Johannesburg, Durban, and their surrounding communities, warning of potential widespread disruptions to public movement and impending security threats.
“Multiple protests have been reported in the Johannesburg and Durban Central Business District (CBD) areas, with demonstrators in Johannesburg expected to converge on the Constitutional Court,” the diplomatic mission revealed.
The high commission highlighted that these public demonstrations are likely to result in significant traffic disruptions, road blockades, restricted movement, and potential confrontations between civil protesters and law enforcement personnel.
To ensure personal safety, the mission strongly advised Ghanaians across the affected regions to exercise maximum vigilance and strictly adhere to key safety protocols. Citizens have been directed to avoid protest sites, large crowds, and areas experiencing public disturbances, while limiting non-essential travel to the affected commercial districts until stability is restored.
In addition, travellers have been urged to anticipate road closures, utilise alternative routes, and closely monitor local news reports alongside official security updates issued by the South African Police Service (SAPS) and municipal authorities.
“Avoid confrontations with protesters and refrain from activities that could expose them to unnecessary security risks,” the directive stated, further encouraging nationals to maintain regular communication with family members and community leaders.
Ghanaians facing threats, intimidation, or violent incidents are urged to report immediately to local police authorities and contact the High Commission directly should consular intervention be required.
Urging the community to remain calm and obey all lawful directions from local security forces, the mission also cautioned against sharing unverified information that could cause unnecessary panic.
“The safety, security and welfare of all Ghanaian nationals in South Africa remain of paramount importance to the High Commission,” the statement concluded.
