We will resume our strike if our demands are not met as agreed – Teacher Unions

October 11, 2026
Strike

Ghana’s three pre-tertiary teacher unions have warned that any breach of trust by the government will trigger an immediate resumption of their nationwide strike, despite suspending the industrial action following recent negotiations.

The Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT), and the Pre-Tertiary Teachers Association (PRETAG) suspended the strike after intensive engagements involving the Ministry of Employment and Labour Relations, the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC), and the Council of State.

Speaking on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM’s Nyankonton Mu Nsem, PRETAG Director of Communication, Kingsley Ayimadu, explained that the strike was originally called over unresolved grievances regarding promotions, conditions of service, delayed promotion-related arrears, and deprived-area allowances.

Following a meeting convened by the Council of State to address the impasse, a consensus was reached. According to Mr Ayimadu, the government has agreed to establish implementation modalities for the deprived-area allowance by January 2027.

On promotions and placements, authorities have committed to clearing arrears for 51,000 teachers by October 16, with the remaining beneficiaries settled by the end of the month.

Additionally, negotiations regarding the complementary digital instruction support allowance have concluded, with disbursement scheduled for November. Payments for the continuous professional development allowance are slated for December 2026.
