The Ghanaian government has announced plans to recruit 16,500 health professionals this year to combat severe staffing shortages across the country’s healthcare network.

Financial clearance has been secured in advance to guarantee that newly engaged personnel are placed on the government payroll without delay, according to officials.

Speaking on behalf of the administration at the Ghana Labour Conference 2026, Deputy Chief of Staff Nana Oye Bampoe Addo acknowledged the persistent paradox of unemployed medical graduates coexisting with understaffed clinics and hospitals.

“Government plans to recruit 16,500 health professionals in 2026, with financial clearance secured ahead of recruitment so that no new recruit works without pay,” Mrs Bampoe Addo told delegates at the event, which was jointly organised by Mentapulse Africa, the Ministry of Labour, Jobs and Employment, and the University of Ghana Business School.

She added that a nationwide mop-up recruitment drive, launched on 5 October, is already underway to fill remaining vacancies across teaching hospitals, the Ghana Health Service, and Christian Health Association of Ghana (CHAG) facilities.

Despite the recruitment push, industry experts and officials warned that numerical increases alone will not resolve the country’s deepening brain drain.

Addressing the conference on behalf of the Minister for Labour, Jobs and Employment, Chief Labour Officer Dawda Ibrahim stressed that long-term retention depends heavily on improving working conditions, career pathways, and overall quality of life.

Mr Ibrahim noted that factors such as affordable housing, reliable transportation, security, and positive workplace cultures remain pivotal in convincing skilled medical professionals to remain in Ghana rather than seek opportunities abroad.
