President John Dramani Mahama has tasked the newly sworn-in two Deputy Chairs of the Electoral Commission (EC) to operate strictly on the principles of equity, law, and complete political neutrality.
Administering the oath of office to Emelia Afi Agbenyo and Dr Joseph Kweku Asamoah as Deputy Chairpersons on Monday, October 12, 2026, the President charged the pair to safeguard the democratic right of Ghanaians to freely choose their national leaders without fear or favour.
Addressing the ceremony, President Mahama stressed that the mandate given to the electoral officers remains solely to the nation, insisting that no political party, candidate, or sitting administration should receive preferential treatment.
“So let me state clearly. Your duty is to the Republic of Ghana and its people. You must discharge your responsibilities without favour towards any political party, any candidate or government,” he said.
He further noted: “The authority that accompanies your office must always be exercised with fairness, restraint and fidelity to the law.”
Underlining his administration’s commitment to strict electoral compliance, President Mahama explained that the EC must apply uniform standards across the board, including to his own government and ruling party.
“As President, I expect no preferential treatment from the Electoral Commission for myself, my party, or my government. I expect an institution that applies the same standards to everyone and protects Ghanaians’ right to choose their leaders freely,” he stated.
He urged the new appointees to show unwavering courage when carrying out their constitutional mandates: “You must have the courage to uphold what is right even when it is inconvenient for those in power.”
