The Minister for Education, Hon Haruna Iddrisu, has charged the Governing Council of the National Defence University of Ghana to strictly uphold meritocracy, fairness, and academic excellence in managing the institution.

Speaking at the official inauguration of the University’s Governing Council, Mr Iddrisu stressed that all key administrative procedures—including student admissions, registration, graduation, and staff appointments—must strictly be guided by merit and top-tier professional standards.

He emphasised that the institution must operate without any form of discrimination based on race, ethnicity, political opinion, colour, gender, occupation, religion, or disability.

According to the Minister, establishing a solid foundation built on professionalism, discipline, and integrity remains essential as the university works towards bolstering Ghana’s defence and security capabilities.

He noted that the National Defence University is envisioned to become a premier centre of excellence in strategic studies, operational readiness, defence research, and security policy formulation.

This, he added, will ensure military personnel and security professionals are fully equipped to tackle complex national, regional, and global security threats effectively.

The Governing Council of the National Defence University (NDU) is a 19-member body chaired by Professor John Owusu Gyapong.

The council comprises key representatives drawn from relevant government ministries, the military hierarchy, higher education regulatory bodies, and academic institutions.

Its membership includes representatives from the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Defence, the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) high command, and senior military officers.

Additionally, the council features representatives from the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC), affiliated colleges such as the Ghana Armed Forces Command and Staff College, the Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre, and the National College of Defence Studies, alongside academic, convocation, and civil society stakeholders.
