The government is set to allocate GH¢300 million toward constructing 250 residential apartments for police officers to alleviate overcrowding across the country’s barracks.

President John Dramani Mahama announced the planned 2027 budget allocation on Tuesday, October 13, during the inauguration of an 85-bed ward complex at the Ghana Police Hospital. The initiative forms part of a broader government effort to bolster the welfare and operational capacity of law enforcement personnel.

“I’ve requested the Minister of Finance to provide GH¢300 million in the 2027 budget to construct 250 new apartments for the police to ease congestion in some of your barracks,” he said.

Finance Minister Cassiel Ato Forson has been tasked with incorporating the funds into the upcoming budget cycle. Alongside the housing project, the administration is moving to enhance officer safety on duty through additional protective equipment and specialized transport.

A delivery of 40 armoured vehicles is expected in the coming weeks, expanding on a fleet of 50 vehicles provided to the Ghana Police Service in December 2025. Procurements are also underway for additional body armour.

The government maintains that combining improved healthcare access, enhanced protective gear, and upgraded living conditions will better equip officers to perform their duties safely and effectively.
