The Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) has engaged the management of the College of Education at the University of Ghana over the operation of study centres and the need to ensure full compliance with national academic standards.
The Director-General of GTEC, Prof. Ahmed Jinapor Abdulai, held discussions on Wednesday, October 7, 2026, with the Provost of the College of Education, Prof. Peter Quartey, alongside his leadership team to review the college’s operations, active programmes, and regulatory obligations.
Addressing the delegation, Prof. Abdulai highlighted the necessity of a strong working relationship between tertiary institutions and the regulatory body. He expressed concern over the continued operation of study centres that have not yet received formal accreditation, reiterating that all learning sites must meet statutory requirements.
However, the Director-General stated that GTEC is willing to grant the University of Ghana grace period to bring the affected centres up to required standards ahead of formal inspection and subsequent accreditation. He urged the college to capitalise on the opportunity to rectify existing deficiencies, noting that the primary goal is to guarantee a conducive environment for quality teaching and learning rather than merely issuing regulatory approvals.
Prof. Abdulai further tasked the Provost to convey to the university’s central administration the urgent need for increased financial investment in upgrading facilities across its nationwide network of study centres. He noted that expanding access to tertiary education must go hand in hand with deliberate investments in infrastructure, learning tools, and modern resources.
He added that modernising the centres would not only bring the institution into compliance with GTEC guidelines, but also significantly enhance the academic experience of students who rely on distance and regional facilities for their studies.
Prof. Abdulai encouraged the college leadership to maintain close collaboration with the commission to resolve all outstanding regulatory issues and sustain high academic standards.
The meeting forms part of GTEC’s ongoing nationwide initiative to collaborate with tertiary institutions in promoting quality assurance, standardisation, and continuous improvement across Ghana’s higher education sector.
Also present at the engagement were GTEC’s Director of Finance, Mr Frank Nketia, and the Director of Corporate Affairs, Mr Jerry Sarfo.
