The Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Mahama Ayariga, has inaugurated the Steering Committee for the Accra Green and Clean City Initiative at the Ministry’s conference room in Accra.
Chaired by the Ga Mantse, His Royal Majesty King Nii Tackie Teiko Tsuru II, the committee brings together representatives from technical agencies, the Greater Accra Regional Coordinating Council, alongside Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies.
The initiative aims to revamp the national capital into a healthier, greener, and aesthetically pleasing city by fostering robust partnerships with corporate institutions across the country.
Central to the strategy is the Adopt-a-Street and Adopt-a-Corridor Programme. Under this scheme, corporate bodies will collaborate with the Ministry and local assemblies to manage and maintain specified streets, medians, roundabouts, and open spaces through routine cleaning, greening, and tree planting as part of their corporate social responsibility.
Addressing the committee during the ceremony, Mr Ayariga tasked the members to formulate a comprehensive implementation framework, single out high-priority traffic corridors, engage potential corporate partners, and set up strict monitoring measures to ensure a rapid and visible transformation of Accra.
