Vice President Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang has advocated for broader public availability of written records detailing Ghana’s political party histories, pointing out that historical awareness remains crucial to enhancing civic engagement and democratic comprehension.

Speaking during the official unveiling of six historiographies published by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in Accra on Tuesday, October 13, she noted that insights into the country’s political development should not remain the exclusive preserve of citizens who lived through those moments.

Professor Opoku-Agyemang noted that documenting and distributing details of Ghana’s political evolution safeguards vital records for current and upcoming generations.

“Familiarity with our governance institutions, with our constitutional arrangements, and the political experiences that have shaped our Republic” is important for meaningful civic participation, she stated.

She explained that when citizens secure access to detailed historical accounts, they become better equipped to evaluate the institutions, policies, and developments governing the state.

“When that knowledge is accessible, citizens are better placed to participate meaningfully in political life. The knowledge of history is also not restricted to those who have lived through it,” she added.

Highlighting the need for widespread dissemination, the Vice President expressed her desire to see the new texts deposited across educational, public, and private institutions nationwide.

“It is my hope that these publications will reach libraries, research institutions, private spaces, and public officials too,” she said.

Professor Opoku-Agyemang further advised constituency and regional executives of the NDC to store copies in their local offices alongside other key historical materials to preserve party memory.
