The Controller and Accountant-General’s Department (CAGD) has paid promotion-related salary adjustments and arrears to 56,003 teachers under the Ghana Education Service (GES).
The payment, completed ahead of a key government deadline, brings relief to thousands of educators across the country following recent engagements between state officials and teacher unions.
According to a press statement released on Thursday, 15 October 2026, and signed by the Head of Public Relations at the CAGD, Cephas N. Dosoo, the bulk of the beneficiaries received their monies alongside their October salaries.
“Of this number, 49,725 received their payments on 15 October 2026, together with their October salaries. These payments covered salary adjustments and arrears from 1 January 2026. A further 6,278 teachers were paid in September 2026,” Mr. Dosoo stated.
The department highlighted that the disbursements were concluded well ahead of the 16 October deadline previously agreed upon during a stakeholder meeting at the Ministry of Education on 2 October 2026.
Outlining the breakdown of the figures, the CAGD disclosed that out of an estimated 80,000 promoted teachers, the GES processed and submitted documentation for 56,633 staff.
While 56,003 teachers have been successfully cleared and paid, 630 cases remain pending due to discrepancies flagged during the audit.
“CAGD verified and paid 56,003, while 630 cases remain pending due to issues identified during the verification process by the CAGD. CAGD awaits the resolution of these issues by GES for the payments to be effected,” the statement noted.
The department further clarified that a remaining balance of 23,367 teachers is yet to be processed, as the GES is still expected to submit the required supporting documents.
Reassuring the public and affected staff, the CAGD affirmed its commitment to clearing all valid outstanding claims as soon as rectified records are submitted by the education service.
“CAGD has therefore completed payment for all teachers whose submitted records met the payroll requirements. The Department remains committed to processing outstanding eligible payments promptly once the necessary corrections are made or complete and accurate documents are received and verified,” the statement added.
The department concluded by expressing its appreciation to the leadership of the GES, teacher unions, and collaborating ministries for their cooperation in resolving the issue.
