Mahama breaks ground for 1,238-acre Afienya Industrial Park to spur economic growth

President John Dramani Mahama has officially cut the sod for a massive 1,238-acre industrial park in Afienya.

Designed to serve as a catalyst for economic transformation, this flagship enclave aims to boost domestic manufacturing, attract substantial foreign direct investment, and generate thousands of employment opportunities for local youth.

Addressing attendees at the ground-breaking ceremony, President Mahama revealed that the ambitious development addresses the complete land exhaustion at the nearby Tema Export Processing Zone.

The newly designated space in Afienya is projected to host over 120 enterprises, providing crucial spatial capacity for both domestic and international investors eager to establish factories and scale production within Ghana.

To ensure efficient, uninterrupted manufacturing operations, the site is slated to receive comprehensive infrastructure upgrades.

Plans include a dedicated electrical supply network, clean water distribution, paved internal access roads, and state-of-the-art waste treatment facilities.

Financing for these foundational utilities will be drawn from the government’s ten-billion-dollar New Economy Programme, a policy framework focused on accelerating long-term national industrialisation.

Beyond physical infrastructure, community development remains a central pillar of the project. President Mahama urged incoming businesses to actively hire and provide technical training to residents from neighboring catchment areas.

Supporting this vision, Dr. Mary Awusi, Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Free Zones Authority, praised the leadership behind the initiative, emphasizing that the enclave will play a pivotal role in expanding the nation’s export capacity while curbing its dependency on foreign imports.
