Government undertakes 1,000-Kilometre feeder road project to boost food transport and market access

October 19, 2026
Dumelo

A major infrastructure initiative is underway across Ghana to streamline agricultural logistics and connect rural farming communities directly to urban markets. The government has embarked on the construction of 1,000 kilometres of feeder roads, aimed at facilitating the smooth transit of food supplies and enhancing market accessibility for local producers.

Disclosing the initiative during the 2026 Agrifair in Obuasi, organized by AngloGold Ashanti Obuasi Mine, Deputy Minister for Food and Agriculture, John Dumelo, highlighted that the road development is part of a broader strategy to support rural farmers and stabilize food supply chains.

Beyond improving transport networks, the ministry is tackling post-harvest losses by establishing several mini processing facilities within key agricultural zones. Construction of these farm centers is already underway at multiple sites across the country, including Obuasi. These localized processing hubs will allow farmers to add value to their yields and convert surplus produce into shelf-stable goods rather than incurring heavy losses after harvest.

Stabilizing food prices through continuous production remains a primary objective of these interventions.

“All we are doing, we are trying to encourage all-year-round farming for tomatoes so that the prices become stable,” Mr. Dumelo said.

Reflecting on recent market trends, the Deputy Minister noted that food prices have remained relatively low in recent months, expressing optimism that market conditions will become increasingly stable for both producers and consumers by next year.

To sustain this momentum and modernize the sector, Mr. Dumelo urged private and corporate entities to actively engage in agriculture, particularly through targeted seasonal ventures that appeal to younger demographics.

“It’s important for corporate institutions to go into farming, but they should be able to get into farming at the right time. We are encouraging dry-season farming, so some of these corporate institutions can do dry-season farming, let’s say from December to June,” he said.
