NPP National Women’s Organiser demands swift probe into Obuasi SHS sexual abuse allegations

Mavis-Hawa-Koomson-1

Honourable Mavis Hawa Koomson, the National Women’s Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has expressed profound shock and deep sorrow over explosive media reports detailing alleged sexual misconduct involving nineteen female students of Obuasi Senior High School.

The investigative findings, led by journalist Manasseh Azure Awuni, implicate the school’s headmaster, Mr Zakaria Abdulai, in multiple accounts of rape, sexual harassment, and assault. Distressingly, reports indicate that initial complaints lodged by victims as early as March 2026 were ignored by school authorities, raising severe questions regarding institutional accountability and a failure of the duty of care.

Describing the allegations as deeply troubling both as a mother and a professional educator, Mrs Koomson has called upon the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service to launch an immediate, transparent, and independent inquiry. She stressed that justice must be pursued rigorously without political interference or regard for the institutional standing of any implicated individual.

Emphasising that child protection transcends partisan politics, the NPP National Women’s Organiser urged stringent measures to shield victims and their families from intimidation, victimisation, and reprisals. She further appealed to the Ghana Education Service (GES) and the Ministry of Gender, Children, and Social Protection to deliver comprehensive trauma-informed psychological and medical support to the affected girls.

Highlighting systemic vulnerabilities, Mrs Koomson challenged the GES to overhaul its safeguarding framework and supervisory protocols to guarantee that educational institutions remain safe havens for students. She also issued a special appeal to women leaders nationwide, notably Her Excellency the Vice President of the Republic, to lend their voices to the pursuit of justice and institutional reform.

“Justice must be pursued without fear or favour,” Mrs Koomson stated, reiterating that safeguarding the welfare of vulnerable children remains a shared national responsibility.
