MoGCSP disburses emergency cash support to Hohoe flood victims

The Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection (MoGCSP) has stepped in to cushion flood victims in Hohoe with emergency cash grants following severe flooding that battered parts of the Volta Region municipality last month.

The intervention, rolled out under the Livelihood Empowerment Against Poverty (LEAP) Programme, aims to provide immediate relief and assist vulnerable families as they work towards rebuilding their disrupted lives.

A total of 625 individuals drawn from the first batch of verified affected households are benefiting from the financial package. The cash aid is designed to help victims procure food, purchase essential household items, replace damaged personal belongings, and cushion the sudden economic impact of the disaster.

The flooding, triggered by prolonged heavy torrential rainfall and the subsequent overflow of the River Dayi on September 28, left a trail of destruction in its wake. Homes were inundated, personal properties destroyed, and economic activities halted, leaving scores of residents stranded.

Inspecting the level of damage during a visit to the distressed communities on September 30, the Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection, Dr Agnes Naa Momo Lartey, met with affected community members to assess their needs firsthand.

Distressed by the devastation, the Minister instructed the LEAP Secretariat to swiftly initiate emergency support mechanisms to alleviate the hardships of the victims and accelerate their full recovery.
