The Tema Oil Refinery (TOR) has officially resumed crude oil processing after years of operational downtime, marking a significant milestone in Ghana’s quest for energy self-sufficiency.

Speaking at the Government Accountability Series on October16, 2926, the Managing Director of TOR, Edmond Kombat, revealed that crude processing at the facility officially commenced on December 19, 2025, with all product streams successfully directed to storage for the first time in several years.

Detailing the refinery’s steady operational progress, Mr Kombat noted that TOR has successfully received four major crude cargoes totalling five million barrels since May 2026.

These shipments included international blends such as Bonga, Baleine, and Bonnie Light, alongside a historic delivery of Ghana’s indigenous Jubilee Medium Sweet crude on July 15, brought in aboard the vessel MT Apache.

According to the Managing Director, TOR paid for the Jubilee cargo in full, representing the refinery’s first procurement of Jubilee crude in a decade.

The revival of the facility reached a major climax on August 1, 2026, when His Excellency the President officially commissioned the fully refurbished Crude Distillation Unit, restoring core operational capacity to the nation’s premier refinery.

Building on this momentum, the refinery further strengthened its crude stock on September 25, 2026, after taking delivery of another parcel of Ghanaian indigenous crude.

The 950,000-barrel shipment of Sankofa crude was supplied by TOR’s sister agency, the Ghana National Petroleum Company (GNPC), underscoring enhanced collaboration within the national energy sector.
