No Merit in Your Concerns — DVLA fires back at drivers over TraffiTech sanctions

October 28, 2026
DVLA

The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) has defended its decision to revoke the driving licences of motorists who accumulate six traffic violation tickets within a two-year period, insisting that affected drivers will be required to undergo retraining before being reissued a licence.

The Authority maintained that the enforcement measure forms part of a broader strategy to strengthen driver training, promote accountability, and significantly improve road safety across the country.

Under the policy, motorists who repeatedly breach traffic regulations and accumulate six tickets within 24 months will face automatic licence withdrawal. To regain driving privileges, such drivers must return to the DVLA, complete mandatory retraining, and pass a re-assessment.

However, the directive has sparked intense anger among transport operators nationwide. The drivers have issued a stern warning to the government, threatening to campaign against the administration and vote it out of office in the 2028 general elections unless the controversial TraffiTech system is immediately reviewed.

The agitation followed official confirmation from the Chief Executive Officer of the DVLA, Julius Neequaye Kotey, regarding the automatic revocation protocol and mandatory re-enrolment in driving schools for habitual offenders.

Reacting to the announcement in a press statement, the National Chairman of the Drivers and Car Owners Association, Akwasi Amoah, condemned the proposed enforcement measures as harsh, punitive, and designed to ruin their livelihoods.

In response, the Director of Corporate Affairs at the DVLA, Stephen D. Attuh, dismissed the drivers’ concerns, describing them as entirely lacking merit.

Speaking on Nyankonton Mu Nsem on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM, Mr Attuh argued that the proposed sanctions place necessary emphasis on driver competence and public safety, particularly for motorists who consistently disregard road regulations.

“Driving comes with immense responsibility. As a driver, you are required to act responsibly so you do not put the lives and safety of others in danger. Being a driver does not make you an exceptional human being, nor does it give you the liberty to drive recklessly on the road and endanger others. That is why Regulation 242 of the Road Traffic Regulations 2026, L.I 2519, outlines clear penalties for serious road offences. Under this law, your licence is only revoked after six separate violations, after which you must undergo retraining before a new licence can be issued. If this is what they are opposing, then the concerns they have raised carry no merit,” he said.

Mr Attuh further stated that it is unacceptable for any driver to commit six major traffic infractions within a 24-month period.

“Such a driver clearly lacks an understanding of road traffic regulations. Therefore, we must take you through the process again so you fully grasp your responsibilities as a motorist. While undergoing this training, you will not be permitted to drive. Upon completion, we will re-test you, and if you pass, your licence will be restored. What is wrong with this law? Should we wait for you to kill people on the road before revoking your licence?” he queried.

He added that the DVLA is actively carrying out public sensitisation campaigns ahead of the full rollout of TraffiTech, noting that transport operators cannot claim to be uninformed.

He emphasized that if drivers and road users fail to seek out crucial information designed for their benefit, the DVLA cannot be blamed for their ignorance.
