The United States Department of Justice, through its Scam Center Strike Force, has targeted transnational criminal networks by filing charges against six Africa-based fraudsters implicated in cryptocurrency and non-fungible token investment schemes.
US Attorney Jeanine Ferris Pirro, alongside federal law enforcement agencies and international partners, announced the enforcement action aimed at dismantling cyber syndicates operating across Africa, Southeast Asia, and China.
Investigators revealed that the syndicate deployed human models and stolen photographs of women on dating websites to cultivate romantic relationships with unsuspecting victims in the United States. Scammers carefully profiled these individuals, recording their full names, residential locations, occupations, and contact details within organized smartphone directories to monitor targets throughout the deceit.
Once trust was established, operatives instructed targets to link their digital cryptocurrency wallets to fraudulent NFT investment platforms controlled by the syndicate. The perpetrators then drained the funds directly from the connected wallets without the victims’ knowledge, leaving investors with significant financial losses.
Federal authorities confirmed that interagency operations remain ongoing to identify further co-conspirators, seize illicit financial assets, and dismantle the broader transnational networks executing similar cyber frauds worldwide.
